What is Independent Study in the LAUSD Virtual Academy?

A Voluntary Educational Path Tailored to Students' Needs

LAUSD Virtual Academy is an online Independent Study instructional program offering a voluntary alternative educational path that fulfills the district's curriculum objectives, ensures mastery of state standards, and meets graduation requirements. Independent Study involves the following:

  • Master Agreement: Families and Students sign the Master Agreement with their teacher to agree to independent study expectations for academics, attendance, and participation. A signed Master Agreement is required before a student can officially be enrolled in the LAUSD Virtual Academy.
  • Record of Assignment (ROA) Meetings: Weekly one-on-one meetings are held between the student, teacher, and family to review completed assignments, academic progress, and upcoming instructional expectations.
  • Participation: Students are highly encouraged to attend live Zoom classes daily to receive teacher-guided support and instruction. Students may also demonstrate daily participation by connecting with their teachers via email or phone.
